ORTHO MAP SHOWING MAIN NATURAL LANDFORMS IN TOWNSVILLE
MAGNETIC ISLAND~
Magnetic Island is thirty minutes of the coast of Townsville. Easily accessible, it is a busy tourist attraction. It's main beach is Horseshoe Bay, where there is a strip of small shops and some boats/catamarans/water trikes for rent. Magnetic Island is surrounded by small reefs, and is home a massive national park.
PALLARENDA~
Pallarenda is a long strip of coast, with a parallel path following it the whole way along. When driving along it you will find a golf course, the town commons, an environmental site office and at the very end, on a hill, sits a military radar. Several sections of Pallarenda are set aside for off-leash dog walking and horse riding.
THE STRAND~
The Strand runs along the foreshore of Townsville, and feature a main oval, several parks, a jetty, restaurant strip, rock pool and Tobruk Memorial Pool. From it there is a clear view of Magnetic Island. Many festivities are held there, and the Red Baron (a well known Townsville icon) flies over daily.
CASTLE HILL~
Castle Hill is a central landmark in Townsville. It is the home of The Saint, a gratified saint painted on the east side of the hill. The government has tried to get it removed, but the locals where outraged, as so it stayed, as a Townsville icon. It was incorrectly named a mountain, but has since been declared a hill, as it it eight meters too short. It has a road, several goat tracks and a set of steps leading to the top of the hill, where there are several lookouts and an infinity rock.
ROSS RIVER~
Ross River is Townsville's main water source. It is also a popular watercraft spot; rowboats, kayaks, paddle boards, swimmers and malibus often use the river for training. It also is a good fishing spot, and many fish off the weirs. There is a path running all along the river, which is open for walkers, runners, bicycles and rollerblades/skateboards etc...
