There are several Indigenous tribes belonging to the Townsville area. The Wulgurukaba people where on Magnetic Island, and through out the Palm Islands. Some also chose to live around Cape Cleveland. The Warunga people lived around the headwaters of the Burdekin RiverThe Warunga people lived around the headwaters of the Burdekin River. Warakamai people where situated around Halifax Bay. There where three other tribes who lived around the Townsville area; Bindal, Juru and Nywagi people. However, it is the Bindal and Wulgurukaba peoples who traditionally own our land. It is these tribes that speak the Birrigubba language.

However, it is the Bindal and Wulgurukaba peoples who traditionally own our land. However, as shown in the pie chart, Townsville is only home to 10,701 indigenous peoples.
