Interests and Activities

Townsville has many cultural locations, where people can get together, play sport or involve themselves in other activities.

MAGNETIC ISLAND~
Magnetic Island is a popular holiday for teenagers. It is only thirty minutes away, so is a great weekend getaway. There are many types of accommodation and activities, all ranging in price. You can go snorkelling, sailing or walk the fort work. Magnetic Island is home to Arcadia SLSC, one of Townsville's two lifesaving clubs. They are situated at Alma Bay, sheltered bay with a reef out at the back.


STRAND~
The Strand is always bustling people. There are parks, ovals, rockpools and several patrolled beach. The second SLSC, Picnic Bay Club, is located here. It patrols and trains on Net Two. The main oval always has something happening; fitness squads, football training, cultural festivals, car shows and frequent triathlons are based on this central location.


CIVIC THEATRE~
Townsville Civic Theatre is North Queensland's main cultural facility. It is know to be a dynamic, entertaining environment, providing a wide range of genres. Townsville Civic Theatre offers comedy, drama, opera, music, dance performances and art exhibitions. Artists, both international and national, who come to perform in our theatre complement the range of local talent that TCC showcases. The program is designed to appeal to everyone, with a broad selection of shows, made to suit the interests of youths, primary and secondary schoolers, seniors and families.

RIVERWAY~
Riverway is a popular free pool, situated in Kirwan. Both pools are patrolled by lifeguards. There are two large lagoons and a wadding pool. Near the pools is a large caged of playground and a boat access ramp into Ross River. Next to the pool there is a restaurant, Pinnacles Art Gallery and a small cafeteria. During the year, the Greek Festival is held here. Not far from the pool there is a soccer field and a skate park.

JAMES COOK UNIVERSITY~
James Cook University is Townsville's university. It is home to 1 400 boarders and 11 500 day students. It specializes in Marine Biology. JCU is recognised in the top 4% of best universities worldwide. It covers the Arts, Business, Creative Arts, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine and Health Sciences, Science, Information Technology and Social Sciences; however, focuses on subjects relevant to our region.
